An Orange from Florida

It isn't always the big things or the great events that mean the most.  Often it's the little things, the seemingly insignificant things that create that memorable moment in someone's life.

Our patient had longed to be baptized ever since his spiritual experience one and ½ years ago.  As his life was drawing to a close he finally got the opportunity.  Working closely with his church and pastor the family arranged for him to attend a church service and be baptized.  He was overjoyed when it occurred and often afterwards would spend much time quoting Scripture.  His baptism was truly a memorable moment.

And now……the rest of the story.  His social worker was going on vacation to Florida for a week.  Our patient loved to vacation in Florida and loved Florida oranges and he asked the social worker to bring one back to him.  She granted his request.  Returning from vacation she visited our patient and delivered a plump, juicy, Florida orange.  By this time he was declining and death was near.  He couldn't eat the orange but he did recognize it for what it was and received the gift with a huge smile, he had touched Florida once again.  He died later that day.

Robert Brault said, "Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things."
