Out on the Town

Our South Haven team had a patient who loved clam chowder, specifically the clam chowder served by a local restaurant.  It had been quite a while since she had been able to visit that eatery as she and her significant other of some 30 years had long been residing in a nursing home.  She was not always lucid, but when she was, she would talk of how she longed to have a cup of clam chowder and see South Haven once more.  A plan was hatched.  Our staff, along with two volunteers, made it happen.

On the chosen day, with a van for each patient, their necessary equipment, and volunteers, they made their way to the restaurant.  The local establishment, who knew ahead of time they were coming, had prepared a table for the two of them.  With the two volunteers ready at a moment's notice at nearby table, the two enjoyed lunch together in their favorite haunt.  She had her cup of clam chowder.  After lunch the volunteers, with patient and significant other in their wheelchairs, enjoyed a walking tour of downtown South Haven before returning to the facility.
